alibata ( "baybayin"/"to spell" )
Keeping myself busy understanding these...!!
Those scripts are what we call alibata, an ancient writing system used here in the Philippines, before the Spaniards came ( and i guess before we were being named Philippines!! ) . Too bad it isn't being taught in our schools. i think some schools do teach this, but it certainly isn't compulsory...
I remember, i think i took this shot last summer (may2006) when we went to Quezon City Memorial Circle..and it depicts here these ancient Filipino scripts being written on bamboo ... no wonder nothing is left of those originals!
took the above shot from this structure:
for an interesting read, here are some links: origin, translate some word/words to alibata, and some more links! :o)
"Our ancestors wrote messages on palm leaves and on bamboo slats. They left them on mountain trails for a passerby to deliver to the addressee in another town in case he was going that way. Now we write on computer screens and send messages around the world at the speed of light." - written by Hector Santos
